The presentation and ceremonial presentation of copies of the fifth edition of the Red Data Book of the Republic of Belarus took place on January 8 at the Vitebsk Regional Library named after V. Lenin.
Aleksey Markovsky, Deputy Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, noted that the new edition includes 523 plant and animal species. Fifty-five rare species have been added and 39 have been excluded. In the Vitebsk region, 45 rare animal species and 73 rare plants are found in specially protected natural areas.
The Red Data Book of the Republic of Belarus is a state document and has legal status. It serves as the basis for developing environmental protection programs, which have helped preserve numerous plant and animal species that were once on the brink of extinction. The brown bear population, which is no longer endangered today, was cited as an example of successful work.
Copies of the fifth edition were donated to the regional library collections, as well as to libraries in Vitebsk and the Vitebsk district. Regional Library Director Tatyana Adamyan emphasized that all previous editions, beginning with the 1981 «Red Data Book of the Belarusian SSR», are carefully preserved at the library. Back then, the book featured 85 plant species and 80 animal species.
You can get acquainted with the new edition in the subscription departments, local history department, children's department and the general reading room.
