The presentation of «Kazimir Malevich. Black Square: 110» by Professor and Doctor of Art History Tatyana Kotovich took place on December 17 at the regional library as part of the «Local History Meetings» project.
This is the eleventh book published in the «Vitebsk Notes» series. The monograph explores Kazimir Malevich's iconic painting «Black Square» and examines it within the context of the chronotope – the space and time in which an artistic image is born and develops.
During the meeting, the author discussed the transformation of painting, beginning with Impressionism and leading to new artistic movements; Kazimir Malevich's teaching program and his Cubist workshop at the Vitebsk People's Art School; and the «Black Square» as the quintessence of Suprematism and a symbol of 20th-century artistic exploration. about variations of the famous work created in Vitebsk.
The presentation was not only an introduction to the new book but also a fascinating discussion about Malevich's role in the history of world art, his influence on the development of avant-garde movements, and the significance of Vitebsk as one of the artistic centers of the early 20th century.
