On December 23, the library held a literary-historical composition «How it all began», dedicated to December 25, 1979 - the day of introduction of the Soviet troops to the Republic of Afghanistan.
The hosts of the event, the head of the Department of Local History Larisa Rogacheva and the soldier-internationalist, Guard Major of the medical service Alexander Khalatryan, reminded the audience about the events before the entry of the Soviet troops as well as about the number of participants of military actions - soldiers of the Soviet Army, read out the memories of the commanders and privates. The Chairman of the regional organization of the public association «Belarusian union of veterans of the war in Afghanistan» Valerian Matskevich emphasized that the event is held as a tribute to the memory of all those involved in the heroic and tragic Afghan war.
The hall was attended by soldiers-internationalists, veterans of the 103rd Guards Airborne Division, who were the first to enter Afghanistan, widows of the dead soldiers, pupils of Vitebsk State College of Electrical Engineering and Vitebsk secondary school No. 4. Lieutenant colonel (retired) Timofey Khoroshenki, lieutenant colonel (retired) Ivan Burlaka and major (retired) Alexander Mostibrotsky have told about the events of the first days of the war and the first combat operations. squadron commander, retired Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Ruchets reminded about the activities of aviators of 339 military transport aviation regiment. The pupil of the secondary school № 4 of Vitebsk Evgeny Butmanov made a report «We keep Afghanistan in memory», dedicated to a graduate of the school and a soldier-internationalist Sergey Korotkin who died in Afghanistan, and to the projects, realized in the school for the preservation of the memory of participants of the Afghan war.
No one was left indifferent to the songs performed by Pyotr Zakharov, Yury Pavlyuk, Valentina Grechannik and Elizaveta Novikova.
