
Thematic evening «Milestones of the Afghan war in the history of the Republic of Belarus»

On February 10, as a part of the Year of historical memory a thematic evening «Milestones of the Afghan war in the history of the Republic of Belarus» took place in Vitebsk regional library.
The event was prepared by the staff of the Vitebsk state museum of soldiers-internationalists. The evening was attended by the participants of the combat operations in the Republic of Afghanistan, representatives of the regional and city public associations, the staff of the Museum of soldiers-internationalists, teachers, the media, students and pupils.
Valerian Matskevich, Chairman of the Vitebsk regional organization of the public association «Belarusian Union of Veterans of the War in Afghanistan», internationalist warrior and writer Valery Marchenko. The warrior an-Afghan Vyacheslav Belous shared his memories about the Afghan war from May 1985 to February 1989 and performed musical compositions. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Novichkov told about the 339th military transport aviation regiment in Afghanistan. The teacher of the Vitebsk City Palace of Children and Youth Galina Novak has introduced the activity of the association on interest «Regional studies» on immortalization of memory of soldiers-internationalists - natives and residents of Vitebsk. A presentation prepared by the staff of the museum of soldiers-internationalists was shown to the guests of the event. The main curator of museum funds Victoria Harkevich told how the Vitebsk newspapers of the 90-ies got acquainted the citizens with the Afghan events. Musical numbers performed by the teacher Ekaterina Belyaeva and pupils of Vitebsk gymnasium № 3 sounded during the event.
The words of Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Council of Deputies Vladimir Terentyev had a great impression on the guests and participants of the evening. He referred to the issues related to the current problems of preservation and perpetuation of the memory of soldiers-internationalists and participants of the Great Patriotic War and patriotic education of the younger generation.
The library staff prepared a book exhibition devoted to the Afghan topic.
