Rare Book Sector
The Rare Book Department of the Library was established on January 1, 2022, and today it is the center for collecting, storing, and record keeping of rare or highly prized editions in the library holdings, which are distinguished by outstanding historical and cultural, artistic and aesthetic, as well as printing values.
In the collection of rare editions, there are more than 2.5 thousand copies of books and periodicals of the 19th – 21st centuries in Belarusian, Russian, and in the Western European languages. Among them are rare books of the 19th – early 20th centuries, lifetime editions of the classics of national and world literature, publications from the Great Patriotic War era, local history publications, miniature books, signed by authors books which include copies with signatures of prominent figures of science and culture, facsimile editions, modern book-printing art masterpieces.
The auxiliary scientific collection of the Department includes reference books, monographs and collected volumes on history, literary criticism, art criticism, library science, publications on the history of the book, and bibliographical disciplines.
THE MAIN AREAS OF THE DEPARTMENT'S ACTIVITIES INCLUDE
Building up, cataloging, storage, and preservation of the rare editions collection;
Maintaining the information retrieval vehicle of the Department;
Information bibliographic user service;
Facilitation of public access to the rare editions collection through exhibition, excursion, and publishing activities;
Conducting research and development, along with methodological work in regards to the preservation, description, and handling of rare books;
Participation in national, regional programs and projects on the conservation of rare books.
The exposition «A generous heritage of bygone ages: rare editions of the library» of the exhibition hall «Ex Libris» of Vitebsk Regional Library named after V. Lenin introduces rare documents from the departments's collection.
