As part of the library project «Belarus – the country of my future», the youth department continues to introduce you to outstanding figures in Belarusian history.
This time we will pay attention to the legendary Prince of Polotsk Vseslav Bryachislavich, known as Vseslav the Sorcerer. His reign was significant for Belarusian history, he strengthened the independence and influence of the Principality of Polotsk as the first state on our lands. Particularly significant was the famous battle on the Nemiga in 1067, when Vseslav's troops defeated the Polish invaders.
Thanks to his tireless and energetic activity, many cities grew and developed, for example, during this period the first chronicle mention of Minsk occurred.
Vseslav the Sorcerer was the initiator of the construction of the Polotsk St. Sophia Cathedral, which became not only an architectural gem, but also the center of spiritual culture of the Belarusian land in the 11th–12th centuries. This cathedral, with its majestic domes and unique frescoes, became a symbol of faith and unity for the Belarusian people, who preserve the memory of the glorious past of Belarus.
