On March 11, as a part of the project «Touch the rarity» for the Orthodox Book Day, the ExLibris exhibition hall opened an exhibition of facsimiles of the Slutsk Gospel which is one of the Orthodox sacred objects of Belarus and a unique monument of handwritten books of the 16th century.
The Slutsk Gospel was created approximately in 1582 and is considered to be handwritten by Yuri Olelkovich, Duke of Slutsk. The Four
Gospel in folio format (38.8×25.2 cm) is written on 256 sheets of paper in beautiful script, which is the oldest variant of the Cyrillic alphabet. The book is richly decorated with colored headpieces, initial letters and titles, which are decorated with traditional geometric and floral ornamentation using vermilion and gold. «The top of artistic perfection», - so estimated the design of the Gospel one of the authors of its description in the XIX century.
Visitors of the exhibition are the members of the primary organization of veterans of the BPAV of the main justice department of Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, students of secondary city schools and readers of the library. During the excursions all visitors had the opportunity not only to see the rarest and most valuable editions from the library's collection and to learn more about the history and development of Slavonic writing and books in the Belarusian lands, but also to hold in hands and leaf through the facsimile of the unique Gospel.
Participants of the historical journey «Slutsk Gospel. The return of the relic» - students of secondary schools № 11 and № 33, gymnasium № 5, Vitebsk State Electrotechnical College - got closer to the history of the creation and miraculous finding of this relic. They cautiously turned and looked through the pages of the book with curiosity, admired the beauty of numerous headings and titles and tried to read the text of the Gospel in Church Slavonic language.
During the first week of the exhibition more than 150 readers and guests of the library were able to see the monument of the Belarusian handwritten book.
The exhibition will be open until the end of April 2024.
We invite everyone to plunge into the past for a while and touch the book rarities.
