Free Courses «Vitebsk: the real and popular history of the native town»
On September 26, the first lecture of the new season of free courses «Vitebsk: the real and popular history of the native town» was held in Vitebsk Regional Library. The topic of the lecture was «My Family Tree. How to Search for Your Ancestors».
Denis Yurchak, chief specialist of the Department of Culture of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, and Anatoly Dulov, Head of the Department of the History of Belarus at Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov, congratulated the students of the course on the beginning of a new semester. Many people are interested in finding their ancestors. The chief archivist of the State Archives of the Vitebsk Region, Candidate of Historical Sciences Konstantin Karpekin explained how to start the search and which archives to contact. Konstantin spoke about the principle of storing documents in the archive, the types of documents, the documents stored in the regional archive, and also shared his experience in finding his ancestors using the example of his own family tree. Irina Shishkova, director of the Vitebsk Regional Museum of the Hero of the Soviet Union M. Shmyryov, and Denis Yakovlev, the chief archivist of the museum, spoke about the electronic databases dedicated to the participants of the First and Second World Wars, the peculiarities of the search in the databases, the materials that can be found on the museum website.
