On January 24, a regular class within the framework of free courses «Vitebsk: the real and popular history of the native town» took place in Vitebsk Regional Library. The topic of the class was «The Vitebsk People's Art School: 100th Anniversary of the school of Chagall».
Doctor of Arts, Professor Tatyana Kotovich spoke about the history of the building where the school was located – the house of Vishnyak, about the conditions in which the school was created. The first director of the school was Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. The teachers of the school at different times were Marc Chagall, Ivan Puni, Vera Ermolaeva, Lazar Lissitzky (El Lissitzky), Alexander Romm, and others.
A new stage in the life of the school was associated with the arrival of Kazimir Malevich in Vitebsk. It was here that he created the association «Affirmers of the New Art» («Utverditeli Novogo Iskusstva») (UNOVIS).
Tatyana Viktorovna told about the different stages of development of the Vitebsk People's Art School and the atmosphere prevailing in Vitebsk at that time.
