Free Courses «Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native Town». «Vitebsk in 1812»

On the 9th of March the library hosted a regular session of the courses «Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native Town» which was entitled «Vitebsk in 1812».

Chief Specialist of the Main Department for Ideology, Culture and Youth Affairs of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee and candidate of historical sciences Denis Yurchak spoke about the prerequisites for the war, the recruitment to the Russian army carried out on Belarusian lands, and the «Scythian tactics» of the Russian army during the war of 1812. The lecturer placed a great deal of focus on the battles that had taken place in the vicinity of Vitebsk (in Ostrovno, Kukovyachino and near the village of Tarny), and that had enabled the Russian army to successfully retreat.

Local historian Inna Abramova spoke about 16 days that Napoleon had spent in Vitebsk. She said that every day Napoleon had made a tour around the town. During his stay in Vitebsk he had written upwards of 100 letters. During the emperor's stay, the temples were readjusted to the economic needs of the Napoleonic army; several pontoon bridges had been constructed. Inna Abramova also described the story of the creation of the monument to the heroes of the war of 1812 in Vitebsk.

Candidate of historical sciences and local historian Nikolay Pivovar told about Napoleonic places of Vitebsk region. «French cemeteries», «Napoleonic road» or «Napoleonic treasure» - those are more of a legend than a historical evidence of the past. Yet, there are places on Vitebsk region that are actually associated with the war of 1812 like the oak, that had been destroyed not long ago in Beshenkovichi, under which Napoleon had took rest, or the palace where he had stayed, or the monuments to the heroes of the war.

Books recommended for those willing to make a more thorough study on the subject of the lecture can be found at the Department of Local History Literature and Bibliography. The records of the lecture can be found at the project's community on VK and on the website of the Vitebsk Regional Library.
