Free Courses «Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native Town». «The Castles of Vitebsk»

On the 22nd of December the library hosted a regular session of the free courses «Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native Town». This time, the topic of the session was «The Castles of Vitebsk».

The chief lecturer of this session was Candidate of Historical Sciences Nikolai Pivovar. He mentioned that there was a time when Belarus was referred to as the country of castles. There were many of them – the castles of Lida, Bobruisk, Novogrudok, Lyubcha, Mir and Nesvizh – and all were more famous than Nizhni, Verkhny and Vzgorsky castles that had been built in Vitebsk. Yet, those were the castles of Vitebsk that had the most significant strategic importance during the existence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Nikolai Pivovar spoke about special features in the construction of Belarusian castles. He also spent some time talking about the personalities who had constructed those castles and whose names had been mentioned in the course of previous sessions – Princess Olga, Prince Vasilek, Prince Algirdas and his second wife Uliyana from Tver'. Part of the Nizhni Castle fortifications survived to this day and can be found at Dukhovsky Kruglik museum thanks to the efforts of archaeologist and associate professor at the Department of History of Belarus of VSU Tatyna Bubenko. It was her who had found the remnants of stone walls during the excavations works in 1984. A video record of Tatyana Bubenko speaking about the castles of Vitebsk was demonstrated to the audience. The video had been recorded as part of the project «The Castles of Vitebsk: Glory of Days Past».

Candidate for Historical Sciences Denis Yurchak stressed that the new roadmap of Vitebsk development involves the construction of a section of the castle's wall. The event was also attended by Igor Durov, a teacher at the Children Art School «Maladzik» and the creator of numerous pictures depicting the castles of Vitebsk, who talked about his art works «The Castles of Vitebsk in the 12th century» and «The Castles of Vitebsk in the 14th century».

Books recommended for those willing to make a more complex study on the subject of the lecture can be found at the Department of Local History Literature and Bibliography. The records of the lecture can be found at the project's community in VK: https://vk.com/histvitebsk and on the website of the Vitebsk Regional Library http://vlib.by/index.php/ru/vitsebsk-realnaya-i-papulyarnaya-gistoryya-2016.
