«Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native Town»

On September 13, 2016 Vitebsk Regional Library hosted the first section of the free course «Vitebsk: Real and Popular History of the Native Town». This is a joint project, launched by Vitebsk Regional Library named after V. I. Lenin and the Department of History of Belarus of VSU named after P. M. Masherov in cooperation with the club of historic re-enactment «Vargentorn» and Vitebsk news portal. The subject of the first section was «Vitebsk in its pre-town period» («Baltic Vitebsk»).

The section began with the speech of Director of Vitebsk Regional Library Tatyana Adamyan who mentioned that a large number of Vitebsk residents show interest in the history of their native town. One of the project's moderators Denis Yurchak, Chief Specialist of the Main Department for Ideology, Culture and Youth Affair and PhD of historical sciences, underscored the candid character of the course for both listeners and speakers. He also noticed that the sections devoted to specific topics are to be read by the most competent historians, local history specialists and archivists.

The first section was devoted to the period when an ancient settlement of Baltic-Dnieper-Dvina culture was sitting on the top of Lomikha hill. Historical sources, from where the scientists glean information about ancient history, were the subject of a lecture read by Anatoly Dulov, Head of the Department of History of Belarus of VSU named after P.M. Masherov. Peter Podgurski, PhD of historical sciences, archaeologist and Vice-Chairman of Vitebsk city executive committee, talked about where and when there had been archaeological excavations in Vitebsk. For a long time Peter Podgurski himself had participated in excavations of settlements of Dnieper-Dvina culture.

There was also the presentation of a 3D reconstruction of the settlement on Lomikha hill, created under the direction of Denis Yurchak by students of the Faculty of Mathematics of VSU. Sergei Buynitsky, a student from that faculty, spoke about the plans of the team to design applications for smartphones.

The section was attended by reenactors from the club «Vargentorn» who recreate life and material culture of the ancient Baltic peoples. A piece of clothes worn by men of the Baltic tribe of Latgalli was demonstrated, photos of women clothes from the same tribe were exposed. The club members also answered the questions of participants.

The next lecture «Princess Olga and the Foundation of Vitebsk: Legend or Myth» is taking place on September 29 at 6 p.m.
