«Local History Meetings» Cycle. Vitebsk Local History Expert Valery Shishanov

On September 22, 2016 the library held a meeting with Valery Shishanov, a local historian and Deputy Director for Science at Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local History. The area of expertise of Valery Shishanov is fairly large as he has participated in a number of scientific conferences, studied Vitebsk history and also written monographs.

For that meeting he prepared a detailed electronic presentation spotlighting his research activities from the period when he had been an employee at the memorial estate of I. Repine «Zdravnyovo» till the most resent interesting findings. Rare photos of Vitebsk that had been taken in the 19th century, photos of the ruined Vitebsk taken during the Second World War and aerial survey photos drew the attention of all participants. His interesting story about the history of our town left no one indifferent. Not long ago Valery Shishanov had celebrated his 50th anniversary. The employees of regional museums, archive as well as local history experts, both specialist and nonspecialists in history came to the library to congratulate the indomitable researcher of the history of Vitebsk and its region. Denis Yurchak, Chief Specialist of the Main Department for Ideology, Culture and Youth Affairs, commended the researcher for his contribution to the unraveling of Vitebsk's mysteries and secrets. Deputy Director of Vitebsk Regional Library Olga Komendantova mentioned in her speech that Valery Shishanov has been the library's reader for 35 years and wished him new discoveries and the accomplishment of all his projects.

There were also congratulations and wishes of interesting and fruitful work expressed by Alexei Sukhorukov, Director of the memorial estate of I. Repine «Zdravnyovo», Alexander Lisov, PhD in History of Arts and Assistant Professor at VSU named after P.M. Masherov, Olga Akunevich, Director of Vitebsk Art Museum, Konstantin Karpekin, Chief Curator of the State Archives of Vitebsk Region, Arkady Shulman, Editor-of-chief of the «Mishpokha» magazine, Valentina Kirillova, fine art expert and coordinator of multiple art-projects and also the representatives of the public association «Golden Age».

The employees of the Department of Local History and Bibliography arranged a book exhibition that included scientific papers and monographs by Valery Shishanov.
